If you have a physical health problem and a behavioral health problem, you might have to go to two different doctors for help with these problems. So it is important that you and your doctors work together. This helps you get good care and may prevent unsafe drug mixes and extra medical tests. It can also save you time and visits to the doctor.
Tell your primary care doctor about behavioral health or substance abuse problems, if you have them. Also be sure to tell your primary care doctor about any treatment you are currently receiving or have received in the past. Give your doctors permission to talk with each other about your health care issues and needs. Legal guidelines require you to give written permission to your doctors before they can share some health-related information. Remember, careful treatment planning plus good communication between you and your doctors are important keys to better health.
